Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) Deadlines

It is very important not to miss a FAFSA® deadline date so you don’t miss out on free financial aid.

Completing the FAFSA not only allows you to be considered for federal student aid but states and colleges use FAFSA information to award their own grants, scholarships, and loans. Also, if you need additional funding, most colleges will not certify private student loans if you have not completed a FAFSA. Make sure you don’t miss the deadlines because some aid is limited and is awarded on a first come first served basis!

Federal Deadlines

Complete the 2022-2023 FAFSA® form if you will be attending college during the 2022-2023 academic year.

  • Corrections or updates must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. CT on September 10, 2023

Complete the 2021-2022 FAFSA® form if you will be attending college during the 2021-2022 academic year.

  • Submit as early as October 1, 2020 and no later than 11:59 p.m. Central Time (CT) on June 30, 2022.
  • Corrections or updates must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. CT on September 10, 2022

Note: If you are or will be attending college during both time periods and haven't completed your 2021-2022 FAFSA® form yet, complete that first, wait one to three days until it processes, then go back in and complete the 2022-2023 FAFSA® form.

Remember, the later you file, the more financial aid you could be missing out on! If you have not done so, complete the application now!

College Deadlines

Colleges may have their own deadlines by which they need the FAFSA in order to determine institutional aid offered through the school. Check with the college(s) you’re interested in attending or are currently attending. You may also want to ask your college about their definition of an application deadline. It’s important to understand if the school deadline date is the date your FAFSA is processed or the date the college receives your processed FAFSA data.

State Deadlines

States may also have deadlines by which they need the FAFSA in order to award state based grants and aid. These types of aid are generally first come first serve so the sooner you have your FAFSA completed, the better. For the 2021-22 Academic Year, for priority consideration for state based grants, you must have submitted your FAFSA by January 15, 2021. Each state has its own deadline. You can find a complete list of all states at studentaid.gov.
